Computers, Music And Movies: How The Compact Disc Impacted And Changed The Industries
Floppy discs may have changed how computers kept and transferred memory, but Compact Discs revolutionized both the computer and music businesses. Originally introduced in the early 90s, CDs were meant to replace floppy drives and cassettes, and over a 10-year period, they not only replaced floppies and cassettes, but made them completely obsolete. Videos, music, data and even video games were all placed on a CD, which was used as a new, multi-purpose storage device of the future. If it were not for the CD, music, software and even movies would not look the same.
Computers
Computers depended on built-in hard drives to save information, but before CDs, computers used floppy drives to transfer media from one computer to the next. As soon as CDs showed up, computer designers started to like CD drives over floppy drives because of the ability to transfer more media onto a single CD; plus, the relatively small cost of a disc was also beneficial. Compared to their floppy-disc alternatives, CDs were thinner and more resistant to damage.
Music
Computers may have profited from CDs the most, but the music business came in at a close second. With CDs, an individual could keep up to hundreds of digital songs on one disc, and no floppy or cassette could ever hold as much storage as a single CD could. With assistance from the Internet, Peer-to-Peer music programs and a music burner, individuals could copy their most beloved songs onto a disc. Pirating music is illegal, and while the federal government did aim to put a stop to many of the popular P2P music programs, it didn’t impede millions of users from placing thousands of songs onto CDs. No other music medium, including vinyl records and cassettes, gave shoppers the power to produce their own custom audio compilations.
Movies and Games
Video games and movies used to be crammed onto cartridges or cassettes, but with CDs, all the memory could be kept on an easy to carry item. Now, the DVD developers were able to jam higher resolution pictures onto Blu-ray discs, allowing for better viewing quality than the prior cassette and HD-DVD CDs. The video game market no longer had to concern itself with less memory that cartridge-based games had and could cram more information on one CD with ease.
Of course, vinyl albums and cassettes may no longer be used every day, but some individuals collect these items as personal keepsakes or because of the rarity in the album or cassette. Individuals may have old White Stripes vinyl records laying around the house, but the sentimental worth an album has is priceless.
