What to Focus on During a Legal Separation

During your separation, it’s a good idea to avoid badmouthing your spouse. Children will always love both of their parents. If you have an issue with your partner, then discuss it with them and leave your children out of it.
Many couples end up having sex even while they’re legally separated. If you don’t want to get back together, then you don’t need to have sex. Most states require you to be separated for a determined amount of time. You will negate any time served by having sex.
It’s also common for one spouse to begin seeing other people while they’re separated from their partner. You may be able to find someone that makes you truly happy. Dating as many people as possible may not be in your best interests though.
It’s best to wait until you’ve found someone that can make you truly happy. Telling your former spouse is something you should consider after you’ve been in a new relationship for a while. You may end up causing more harm than good by keeping it a secret.
You also need to think about getting a separation agreement during this time. This document will define certain aspects such as what bills everyone is responsible for paying as well as when each parent gets to spend time with the kids.
Couples that get separated should establish their own bank accounts. If things take a turn for the worse, you’ll definitely be glad you did. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
